Historically the human experience on earth has evolved through conquest. At this time many people are striving for equality. Still many are still living in the conquest paradigm.
The meme “I am OK, you are OK” permeates much of the current US thinking but it is not that way around the world. In many situations conquests of the past have been forgiven and we are allies with former enemies.
Distill this down to two kids playing with blocks. One realizes “he” needs more blocks and the other has extra, so “he” takes some from the pile and the other one explodes, “Those are my blocks!” Without going into detail, the end result is both “buildings” are destroyed and the blocks are put away for another time.
Unfortunately a superpower in the world has no more right to defense and equality in the world than a smaller country. We all deserve the same equality. The US, in the past has tried to help other smaller countries, spreading the meme of “capitalism” and “freedom” by doing the other countries feel coerced. Like one kid doling out blocks to another, this is not solid basis of equality. But then what is?
If I could reach out to all these countries I would:
1. Listen to their argument
2. Acknowledge and apologize
3. Work with them to take appropriate action to show them:
“I am OK. You are OK.”
We cannot simply carry both memes of conquest and I am OK. You are OK at the same time. We cannot simply remove religious zealotry and extremism.
But we can listen and take appropriate action and build trust to change our message.
Reading what North Korea feels about us is heart breaking, they still believe they are at war with the world and specifically the US, largely based on the meme of one man trying to make good for his history. How can we tell them we are sorry for the past and we want to move forward in peace? How do you change this undertrodden conquest meme to I am OK you are OK?
Let’s start by sending out appropriate messages on every social media. Together we are the One who can change this. The world will hear.
